UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, DECEMBER 5 2017: S.L. BENFICA 0-2 FC BASEL 1893
Elyounoussi and Oberlin headers send Swiss champions through to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since 2014-15 thanks to a 2-0 win at Benfica.
Basel knew victory at the already-eliminated Benfica on Tuesday would almost certainly be enough to qualify from Group A, barring an unlikely heavy win for CSKA Moscow away to Manchester United.
Elyounoussi headed Basel into the lead with his first goal in the Champions League. The striker was left all alone in the penalty area to convert a magnificent cross from Michael Lang.
But the game was mostly dominated by Benfica after the goal, with Lisandro Lopez twice going close. Haris Seferovic also could’ve equalised with a driving effort only for Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik to make a fine save.
Basel's resilience defence protected our clean sheet and when Manuel Akanji got up highest to flick on Luca Zuffi's free-kick, Oberlin was in position to nod home and secure the crucial victory for his side.
