ON THIS DAY IN 2014, GERMANY WORLD CUP WINNER TONI KROOS JOINED REAL MADRID FROM BAYERN MUNICH, FOR £20M.
Toni Kroos signed a six-year-deal with Spanish giants Real Madrid on this day in 2014, shortly after returning from Brazil with Germany, where they won the 2014 World Cup. Kroos was a key player for Germany during the competition, scoring 2 goals on their way to the final.
Kroos, who joined Bayern Munich at the age of 16, made 173 appearances for the German side before his £20m move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Speaking to the media, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "We would like to thank Toni Kroos for his time here in Munich. Adding; "We enjoyed great success here together. We would like to wish him and his family all the best in Madrid and with Real."
Despite signing for Real Madrid, Toni Kroos was very close to moving to the Premier League with Manchester United in the same year, however his agent had told the media the player would stay at Bayern "until at least 2015".
Since his move to Real Madrid, former Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed the German midfielder had agreed terms with Manchester United and was set to join The Red Devils before Real Madrid entered the race for his signature.
Moyes explained; “Toni Kroos had agreed to come in the summer. I had agreed it with Toni himself and his agent."
"I wanted to bring Kroos to Manchester United, from Bayern" Moyes said, "I thought his range of passing and his ability to play people in would have made him a top United player, maybe Scholes' heir. He's gone on and shown at Real Madrid what a fantastic footballer he is.
"Kroos is a special talent, probably the closest thing at [Euro 2016] to a Xabi Alonso, an Andrea Pirlo or Paul Scholes. It's the number of times he gets on the ball, his vision, his choice of when to play long or short.
"He's got a great array of passes and the big thing for me is he tries to make winning passes. He tries to make passes that play teammates through. He's not one who just goes sideways and backwards.
"He's a quarterback of a midfield player, who can open you up with one pass, and there aren't many like that. Like Scholes, Alonso and Pirlo, he'll also try and get forward when he can and have a few shots -- because he's such a good striker of the ball. He doesn't just sit in front of the back four."
Kroos' decision not to join Manchester United became clear when discussing his transfer to Real Madrid, he told a journalist; "'Ancelotti's one of the reasons I came here – I think it's normal to talk with the coach before taking that step". Adding;
'He trusted me from the beginning in a position where I hadn't played that much, which was nonetheless in midfield. I enjoy playing in this position."
Since signing for Real Madrid, Kroos has gone on to win the La Liga once and the Champions League on two occasions.
